Dovetail construction is found throughout Shaker cabinetry. In this workshop participants will learn the proper layout procedure and techniques for cutting dovetails: spacing, marking, sawing to the line, chopping and fitting. Emphasis is on technique, not a finished project. Workshop open to beginning and advanced woodworkers. Please bring a utility knife, square, marking gauge, T-bevel (or dovetail marker), mallet, dovetail saw and sharp chisels. Some tools will be available to borrow as needed. ($59 for Hancock Shaker Village members), plus a $10 materials fee (cash only) payable directly to the instructor. Workshop fee includes admission to the Village all day. Instructor: Peter Forward. A master carpenter and cabinetmaker with more than 40 years of experience, Peter has a long-standing interest in Shaker history and design. He enjoys traditional hand-working methods and often uses tools passed down through his family from his great-great grandfather, a joiner in the 1870s.
