Learn basic blacksmithing skills by making several projects of your choice using traditional blacksmith's tools and techniques in a coal-fired forge. Begin by making several hooks to learn how to manage the forge fire, heat the stock, shape the steel with hammer and anvil, and finish. You may then move on to more advanced projects such as plant hangers, hearth or kitchen utensils, a candle sconce, or other project of your choice. Join us for a fun and fast paced weekend, no experience required, only a desire to learn! NOTE: Wear long pants (jeans), non-synthetic clothing, closed-toed shoes; safety glasses; bring leather gloves if you have them. ($135 for Hancock Shaker Village members) Materials fee of $100 (cash only) payable to instructor. Workshop fee includes admission to the Village all day. Instructor: A blacksmith for more than 25 years, John Boyd. John crafts beautiful yet functional pieces for the home and garden. Based in Charlemont, John and his wife Deb own Country Things from the Stonehill Farm, a shop specializing in forged ironwork and fiber art as well as country giftware and vintage goods. John has been an interpreter in the Hancock Shaker Village blacksmith shop since 2015.
